History

November 1996 – Shamrock Entertainment Investors II (wholly owned investment company of the Roy E Disney company) buys 22 acres with the intention of building $77 million Manhattan Beach Studios. Construction is planned to begin July 1997. Architect is Gary Bastien, AIA, Bastien & Associates, the foremost architect of
state-of-the-art sound stages in California. Richard Gentilucci, Shamrock’s vice president of real estate, is in charge of the studio project for Shamrock Holdings.

July 1997 – Phase One breaks ground – six sound stages with offices, production
support facilities and parking will be ready for production of pilots for the fall 1998 television season.

October 1997 – Fox planned to be the anchor tenant of the soon-to-be-opened Manhattan Beach Studios

Almost as soon as it opened (and before more than 5 of the planned 14 soundstages were finished) Ally McBeal moved in, after taping the first season at Ren-Mar Studios.

October 2008 – Marvel signed a long term agreement to produce Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers

2011 – James Cameron has signed a deal to shoot Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 back-to-back at the Manhattan Beach property, and possibly to relocate his production company (Lightstorm Entertainment) there.
