Stop Motion

The photos below are from the former Universal Experience museum at Universal Studios Hollywood, and show some of the models from the Universal release ‘Paranorman’. The replacement faces in particular are of interest, because they show the level of work required to make the mouth movements synchronise with the pre-recorded dialog tracks. 3D printing technology is used to produce the parts, and they snap onto the puppet heads using magnets to hold them in place. The join between the mouth and eye sections is removed digitally in post-production.

Computer Animation

Computers have been used to assist with animation for many years, starting with Disney’s CAPS system, first used on The Rescuers Down Under in 1990. This was the first completely digitally animated feature.
