Dracula (1931)

Directed by: Tod Browning

Cast: Bela Lugosi, Helen Chandler and David Manners

 IMDb page about Dracula

Studio(s): Universal Studios Hollywood

  • Universal Studios Hollywood: Stage 12 (Interior of Castle / Grand Staircase / Interior of Abbey), Stage 28 (Royal Albert Hall sequence - Bela Lugosi sat in an opera box originally built for Phantom of the Opera in 1925), Little Europe backlot

  • To maximise revenue from this movie, Universal filmed two versions: English-language during the day, then overnight with a different cast, different crew but the same sets, props and costumes in Spanish.

In the days before 'talkies' it was simple to change the title cards between scenes to a different language and edit them into the silent footage. When synchronised sound came along, it became costly to produce international versions of movies.
