{"id":6568,"date":"2016-08-29T09:54:05","date_gmt":"2016-08-29T08:54:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thestudiotour.com\/wp\/?page_id=6568"},"modified":"2024-01-18T22:39:27","modified_gmt":"2024-01-18T22:39:27","slug":"palmdale-airport","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.thestudiotour.com\/wp\/studios\/palmdale-airport\/","title":{"rendered":"Palmdale Airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestudiotour.com\/wp\/studios\/downey-studios\/\"><strong>Downey Studios<\/strong><\/a>, Palmdale consists of a number of large hangars, which provided the massive floor area that certain movies demanded.<\/p>\n<p>The hangar used for movie production of <em>The Terminal<\/em> and for a climactic scene of <em>Pirates of the Caribbean 3<\/em> is almost 600 feet long, 300 feet wide and 97 feet high.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/thesquarerigger.com\/pirates_of_the_caribbean_3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Square Rigger page&nbsp;<\/a>with some amazing photos of the Pirates of the Caribbean setup<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1940 <\/strong>Palmdale Airport built, and is operated by the US government, primarily as an emergency landing strip.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1946<\/strong> Operation of the airport is turned over to Los Angeles County for private use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1950<\/strong> The airport was again taken over by federal government for use in building and testing military aircraft. The facility is named United States Air Force Plant 42.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1984<\/strong> The first B-1 bomber produced at Palmdale is revealed to the press.
