Geils Band used it as a location and suggested there would be a demand for such a facility. What started as a temporary &#8216;meanwhile use&#8217; was so successful that it continued for the next eleven years, until 1994, often fully booked for months at a time.<\/p>\n<p>By the time of it&#8217;s closure it had seven stages, including two soundstages.<\/p>\n<p>The studio was demolished, and is now a large residential community with landscaped gardens called &#8216;Providence Square&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJacob Street Studios have already established a reputation as one of the most popular film studios in the UK\u201d<br \/>\nScreen International<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"London&#039;s Burning TV Series - Behind the Action (1991)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MM6tkZ9JIis?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>History<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>1905: Spillers&#8217; Dog Biscuit Factory opened in Jacob Street. (Company founded in 1829) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.layersoflondon.org\/map\/records\/jacob-street\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ref<\/a>]<br \/>\nThe site was formerly known as Jacob&#8217;s Island, and was featured in Charles Dickens&#8217; Oliver Twist, as the location where Bill Sikes dies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>1982?: The disused factory is used on a music video shoot for the J Geils Band (TBC)<\/li>\n<li>1983 &#8211; Uveco Wharf ceased operation.<\/li>\n<li>1984: The factory is converted into a fully-featured film studio<\/li>\n<li>1987: Heidelberg Dance Theatre performance at the studio<\/li>\n<li>December 1987: Midnight Court performance event at the studio<\/li>\n<li>7 June 1988: The &#8216;biggest of the film studios at Jacob Street Studios&#8217; is the venue for the Docklands Ball<\/li>\n<li>11 October &#8211; 9 November 1991: Pomeroy Purdy Gallery at Jacob Street Studios presented Manga exhibition.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>1992: Studio used for a performance of an operatic version of Lorca&#8217;s <em>Blood Wedding<\/em>. Converted into a 500 seat auditorium with a 22.6m wide stage.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>May 1995: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=clUu5SA5iY4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pretenders gig at the studio was broadcast on TV<\/a><\/li>\n<li>1995: The studio is demolished, except for the mid-19th century front block of the stave yard.
