Named Buildings

The lot at Universal has a number of buildings and roads named after past and current celebrities, patrons and stars.

#2128 – Abbott & Costello
Bud Abbott (1897 – 1974) and Lou Costello (1906 – 1959) were a comedy team massively popular in the 1940s and 1950s with huge influence on artists such as Jerry Seinfeld today. They signed with Universal in 1939 and made their first movie together in 1940 (One Night in the Tropics). Buck Privates in 1941 broke company records, grossing $10 million and in 1942 they topped a poll of Hollywood stars. #5225 – Johnny Carson (1925 – 2005)
Television host and comedian
Until early 2012 this was building was named after Owen Bradley(1916 – 1998)
Nashville record producer, most famous for his work with Patsy Cline.

#2282 – Verna Fields (1918 – 1982)
Film editor in the 1960s and 1970s who is credited with bringing George Lucas and Steven Spielberg together. She was promoted to be a studio executive after being awarded the Oscar for editing Jaws.

#2333 – Jack Foley (1891 – 1967)
Jack Foley started out adding sound effects to the first Universal sound film – Showboat. His work made such an impact that every film sound effects artist is now known as a Foley Artist. More about Jack Foley.

#1320 – John Ford (1894 – 1973) Prolific and massively influential director.

#2252 – William Goetz (1903 – 1969)
Former vice-president of Twentieth-Century Fox who went on to create International Pictures in 1943, which merged with Universal to create Universal International Pictures in 1945, with Goetz as production chief.

#8166 – Edith Head (1897 – 1981) Costume designer. Read more.

#2313 – Alfred Hitchcock (1899 – 1980) Renowned film director of classics such as The BirdsNorth by Northwestand Psycho. [Hitchcock Building demolished in 2021/22, new Hitchcock stage opened 2022 in converted Stage 06]

#2372 – Rock Hudson (1925 – 1985) Actor.

#2352 – Ross Hunter (1920 – 1996) Producer of more than 60 films including ‘Airport’, ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ and ‘Pillow Talk’.

#2160 – Carl Laemmle (1867 – 1939)
Founder of Universal Pictures. Known as Uncle Carl.

#2315 – Henry Mancini (1924 – 1994)
Film composer best known for the Pink Panther theme. Based at Universal between 1952 and 1958.

#1360 – Jules Stein (1896 – 1981)
Opthamologist, benefactor in the world history of vision science and blindness prevention & founder of MCA who went on to found the National Eye Institute in 1966.

#1280 – Lew R Wasserman (LRW) (1913 – 2002)
Chairman and CEO of MCA (Music Corporation of America) (parent company of Universal) until 1990. Credited with establishing the careers of many filmmakers.

#2250 – Jack Webb (1920 – 1982)
Creator of Dragnet, initially on radio, later as a made-for-TV movie and TV series Dragnet 1967 which did phenomenally well, and was followed up with Adam-12 in 1968.

#4250 – Bud Westmore (1918 – 1973)
Make-up artist on over 450 films from 1938 until his death. Bud’s ancestors are still working in make-up today.
