War Horse is based on the classic children's book by Michael Morpurgo.
The National Theatre in London has produced an incredible live play based on the same book, which can be seen at the New London Theatre in London's West End and on Broadway. [More Information about the play].
As the story is based in the south western UK county of Devon, much of the film was shot there on the beautiful Dartmoor National Park and in the village of Meavy. Sequences were also shot at the village of Castle Combe in Wiltshire and Bourne Wood in Farnham.
The studio base for the production was Longcross Studios in Surrey.
Filming began in August 2010 and the film was released at Christmas 2011.
