Pinewood Studios: Pinewood was the original location. However, just after shooting started, Elizabeth Taylor became ill, and the production had to be closed down. Original director Rouben Mamoulian resigned on January 3 1961, and the existing sets were all but scrapped (see Carry on Cleo) |

Six months after the production shut down, it restarted again at Cinecitta Studios in Rome. Elizabeth Taylor had a tracheotomy to save her life, but she could not work in the cold English weather. The sets at Pinewood were discarded, and built again in Rome, at massive cost. Carry on Cleo made good use of some of the sets at Pinewood. |
