According to Mike Hodges on his DVD commentary, the air field scene at the beginning of the film (though set in the U.S.) was shot in Scotland.
The bulk of the movie was shot on soundstages at Shepperton and Elstree Studios.
Due to a disagreement with the creative team, apparently (according to Empire magazine) Sam Jones left the production after live action shooting, and before any of his dialogue could be re-recorded. Most of Sam Jones' dialogue in the movie is the work of a voice actor impersonating him.
